Alternative / Vocational Education
 

Vocational training allows individuals to enhance their skills through completing courses and hands-on work projects.  Some vocational programs lead to certification in a specialized trade.  Individuals with a high school diploma or its equivalent are accepted into vocational programs.  There are other alternative programs for individuals without a high school diploma or its equivalent.  See individual listings for more information on specific programs. 


Youth Build St. Louis   Youth Build Excel
Youth Build St. Louis is a unique program offered through Americorps and the Housing and Urban Development Authority (HUD).  This program is designed for individuals without a high school diploma or the equivalent.  Participants receive on-the-job training and job and life skills training while preparing for their GED exam.  Applicants must reside in St. Louis City.  Please see the following link for more information:

Youth Build website

Youth Build Excel is a job readiness program sponsored through Americorps and the Housing and Urban Development Authority (HUD).  The duration of the program varies according to the individual student.  Students participate in leadership and job training.  Time is spent on various job sites in addition to GED test preparation.  Applicants must reside in St. Louis County.

St. Louis Job Corps   St. Louis Construction Orientation Intake Center

The St. Louis Job Corps Program prepares young adults, age 16 to 24, for work in the building trades through classroom instruction, field training, and work-based learning.  Students have the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience while receiving stipends.  Please see the website for more information.

The St. Louis Construction Orientation Intake Center offer consultation to individuals seeking an apprenticeship in the building trades and to qualified journeymen that are in need of a job placement.  The center serves as a link to the regional construction industry by facilitating communication among contractors and trade unions in order to place qualified workers on available projects.  Please contact Armand Paulet, the Director of the Orientation Intake Center, via telephone at 314-589-8065.
Construction Prep Center  
The Construction Prep Center is a pre-apprenticeship training program sponsored by the Metropolitan Education and Training (MET) Center.  The Construction Prep Center offers an eight-week training program that allows participants to receive job readiness skills before starting an apprenticeship.  The following entrance requirements apply to the Construction Prep Center:  the individual must be 18 or older, have a high school diploma or GED and pass the academic skills assessment in basic math and science.  For further information, please refer to the website below:
