Elementary Education

There are many opportunities for children in 1st through 5th grades to gain early exposure to the construction industry.  Elementary school students can take advantage of at least four different programs.  These programs include Block Kids and Labor Works for You.  Students actually learn the art of design and compete in local and national design contests through the Block Kids Building Contest.  Labor Works for You brings construction and other trades into the classroom by providing teachers with lesson plans and project ideas.  See individual listings for more information on these and other programs.

Block Kids   Build Up!
Students in grades 1-5 are introduced to construction through competing nationally in a design activity sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) St. Louis Chapter.  Designs are created from using interlocking blocks and other material.  Block Kids is intended to create awareness and stimulate interest in construction.   Refer to the NAWIC national website for more details about the Block Kids.

The Associated General Contractors of St. Louis and PRIDE sponsor the Build Up! program.  Fifth grade students explore the construction industry through working with local visiting contractors.  The students learn about construction concepts by completing exercises with tools from the Build Up! Toolbox.  Please contact Joanne Engel via telephone at 314-644-1525, ext 225 for more information.  Also, please refer to the website for more details about the "Build Up!" program in St. Louis.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Education sponsors the Labor Works for You, a classroom curriculum for students in elementary school.  This program introduces students to construction concepts through the use of creative, age appropriate activities.  Workers from the construction industry come into the classroom to assist teachers in the delivery of the lesson plan.  See the website for more information.
